At this moment, these dogs have been at the animal shelter the longest, and are at increasing risk of being killed. They have not been adopted after several months. There are no more foster homes to take them in. For various reasons, private rescue agencies in Central Texas will not assist them. You are their last chance. Some of the Hounds need training to improve their manners, and we'll help pay for that.
The Hounds are asking for just one lucky break.
Can YOU give it to them?

This is Ivan's second time back at the shelter, and he's paying the price for a situation that wasn't his fault. When he first came to us last July, Ivan was a softie, so easy to get along with that we had high hopes he was headed for a happy life when he was adopted. But after a few months of living in a mobile home park, Ivan became stressed out by all the other dogs, people, and distractions that overwhelmed him. He returned in worse shape then when he left, and that's left him at greater risk of being put down. But we volunteers know the gentle giant that still lives in Ivan's heart. Hard Luck Hounds will help his forever family find it again and bring back the Ivan we know and love.

This handsome 4-year-old has a bit of swagger, but we can tell he's very lonely here at the shelter. Buster desperately wants to be with his people. Volunteers have found him to be a friendly, affectionate fellow who seems to be remarkably housetrained. He gets along with other dogs, but is more interested in being close to people. He already knows some of his basic commands, like "sit" and "wait", and seems eager to learn more. Hard Luck Hounds will help Buster's forever family work with him to polish this diamond in the ruff.

The "Love Sponge" is what volunteers have started calling this 2-year-old Labrador mix. Lucinda is a happy, boisterous bundle of affection and energy just waiting for the right family to take her in. Lucinda's been in the shelter a long time, and sometimes she gets frustrated being cooped up in her kennel. Other dogs make her nervous at times, so she might be best as an only dog. Hard Luck Hounds will provide a $150 voucher so her adopters can take her to a trainer and become a perfect team.

This super-sweet 2-year-old American Bulldog mix is pretty easygoing, seems housetrained, and reacts well to other dogs. She's so drawn to people that once or twice she's slipped out of her kennel and walked right up to the nearest person to say hello. She'll get a bit jumpy if she's not getting enough attention, so her adopters will want to work on her behavior some. Hard Luck Hounds will provide a $150 training voucher to help with that. "This is an awesome dog," one volunteer says. Take time to meet her and you'll probably agree.

Ricky, a 3-year-old Blue Lacy, has had a bumpy time at the shelter. With people he's friendly, and often downright charming. But all the other dogs that are around sometimes make him jumpy and nervous. Like many dogs, the longer he spends in the shelter the crankier he gets. Ricky needs to get into a home soon, where he can relax and be the loyal companion that volunteers have come to know.

This stout 3-year-old is off with a trainer right now polishing up his basic obedience skills and learning better manners. Murphy is a handsome, loving dog who will need a strong hand, and will probably do best with an adopter who has dog experience. Once you get past his strong personality, though, you'll find a loyal, smart dog who's eager to please.

With his sleek red coat and glimmering brown eyes, Reggie has been dubbed the Love Bug by one volunteer. And a sweetheart he is, playful, loving, and a bit wiggly. His behavior has been pretty good, but not impeccable. He's been skating on his looks a bit, and still needs some training on leash walking. Hard Luck Hounds will help his adopter with that. But Reggie is a gem. He loves jumping into Lady Bird Lake, and has plenty of energy for someone who wants a running buddy. "He leans into you for pets and gives small kisses when you pet him," one volunteer reports. Reggie, you scoundrel.

Zane was found wandering the streets with a chain and some wire wrapped around his neck. This 3-year-old probably spent much of his early life tied up outside, with little love or affection.
He loves people, and tries very hard to make friends. Sometimes, though, he's just not sure how to behave because no one has ever taught him. Zane will be a bit of a project for whoever adopts him, and Hard Luck Hounds will help pay for the training he needs. But underneath, this boy is all heart. Despite whatever his last family did to him, Zane still dearly wants to be a good dog for the right forever family.

We don't know a lot about this 5-year-old's past, but she seems to have come out of it with a peaceful view of the world. Volunteers say Mia is a mellow dog who seems housetrained and appears to get along with other dogs. She does need some work on her leash manners, and Hard Luck Hounds will provide a $150 voucher to help her adopters work with Mia on touching up her obedience skills.

For a 2-year-old, Delores is a remarkably steady, cool customer. Volunteers have found her to be calm and gentle, easy to leash, and eager to follow your lead. Like most shelter dogs, she gets jumpy in her kennel sometimes, but calms down once she's out for a walk. Delores may not be crazy about other dogs, so a one-dog household might be best for her, especially someplace with plenty of room for her to explore and sniff things.

After 5 years in this big ole' world, Silas has turned out to be one easygoing fella. He'll bark when it's time for his daily promenade, and is easily leashed up and taken for a stroll. One volunteer calls him a "breath of fresh air" for being so easy to handle among all our rowdier guests. He seems housetrained, nods politely at other dogs, and goes back to his kennel when the time comes. It's hard to imagine any home that wouldn't have a place for dog like this.

When Buddy's last owner passed away, this 6-year-old was left in the care of a family friend whose neighbors say mistreated Buddy. But he came to us clearly still full of love and affection. "Buddy is a roly poly...who is easy to leash up and very affectionate," one volunteer reports. Buddy is friendly, curious and loves to give people kisses. He might look like a tough guy, one volunteer says, but he's very laid back and loves attention.

This precious 4-year-old spent the past couple years in a good home, but it ended up just not being the right place for her. Once she knows you, Sunnie opens up and becomes a warm, loving companion. But new things and people scare her, so it takes time and patience to really get to know her. "Her sole goal in life is ear scratches and belly rubs," Sunnie's last owner says. Sunnie's fear sometimes makes her react badly to cats or strange dogs. Sunnie will need some special care and attention to build trust with her next forever family. Hard Luck Hounds will help pay for training to make that happen.

This 3-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix with the most adorable ears is fresh back from obedience training classes, and would love to show you what he's learned. Tanner has been in the shelter since mid-August. He's had one small dustup with another dog, and in the beginning he was unpredictable in his walking and leash manners. So Hard Luck Hounds sent him off to school. Volunteers describe him as a high energy dog who loves people. He's often more interested in being petted than chasing a ball.
#A620849
Maxwell is a precocious 2-year-old with a bit of puppy energy still left in his system. That shows up mainly when he tries to play tug-of-war with his leash. Away from all the barking and chaos of the shelter, though, he settles down nicely. He loves to be petted and squirm his way into your lap. Maxwell is a very sweet dog for whom shelter life is simply too stressful. Some basic obedience training will be good for him, and Hard Luck Hounds will help his adopters with that.
#A620939
If you're looking for a running buddy, this 3-year-old might well be your perfect dog. Graham's got a lot of energy, and he's a strong boy. He likes people, and loves to play. His forever family should be readyy to spend some time wearing him out, because it's going to take some time and attention. Graham definitely needs some basic obedience training, and Hard Luck Hounds will help his adopters set that up.
#A621072
This little fellow is often jumpy in his kennel because he's so excited about getting out to be with people. Once you get him out, though, he's an easy going dog who sits for treats and loves being petted. So if Ajax is bouncing up and down in front of you, don't be alarmed. It's his way of showing how happy he is to see you. A Hard Luck Hounds volunteers will be happy to introduce you to this wonderful dog and show you how much love he has to offer.
#A621079
Sweet and gentle are the words most volunteers use to describe this loving 2-year-old. She's easy to leash and walk, and will probably make a good trail buddy for someone who likes running or hiking. She gets along with other dogs and strangers, and doesn't even seem interested in chasing squirrels!

Pia's first owners say she's a great dog, but with two other dogs in the house they just couldn't keep her. This 2-year-old came to the shelter last July, and was adopted once but returned because her froever parents split up. Pia seems fearful of new people at first, but gets excited when she realizes she's found a new friend. Pia definitely has not learned her boundaries yet. She pulls hard on leash and can get mouthy. She still has some things to learn, but Hard Luck Hounds will help pay for training. "Pia has a happy temperament," one volunteer notes. "She is very playful and absolutely LOVES to fetch tennis balls."
